People commonly say you should “follow your intuition” or “listen to your intuition,” but what is intuition, exactly?
For starters, I understand intuition as a “natural” or innate gift, talent or ability (“sixth sense”) that we all have based on the fact that we are incarnated, energetic beings. So this ability is something we all share. However, some of us happen to be more skilled or adept at tapping into this ability than others, much like how some people are better at playing sports or remembering information.
One way to better understand intuition is through the phrase, “a knowing without knowing.”
I started using this expression about twenty five years or so ago when I first started “trusting” knowledge and information coming through this “channel.”
I remember one event very clearly. I was visiting my mom’s house and she got a call from my aunt, telling her how my cousin just had a new baby but there was a slight defect. My mom was standing in the kitchen with the phone to her ear, and as I made my way to the kitchen for more coffee for some reason I pointed to my upper lip. Just then my mom shared how my cousin’s son was born with a cleft lip.
Now, mind you, I couldn’t hear the conversation at all. I just “knew” there was a problem of some kind, and intuitively knew what the problem was.
This, my friends, is what I mean by a “knowing without knowing.”
You can think of it another way. Information or insights you receive by way of intuition are truths that “pick up” without any “evidence” that the information received is true. And what’s more, there’s no need for evidence. You just “know” something, and know it to be true, even though nothing in your experience or environment is there to “support” this truth or serve as the “cause” of this inner knowing.
There will be times, however, that events will play out or information will be received in other (“typical”) ways to support what you already “knew.”
In the case of my cousin’s son, I didn’t have to wait to long for my inner knowing to get confirmed. In other cases, however, a significant amount of time might pass to “prove” what you already knew to be true.
