Reflection:
“The way to know life is to love many things.”
It may seem strange to connect intellect and heart, knowledge and love. But in order to really know anything you need an openness found in the attitude of “I don’t know” followed by a desire to know. It’s a two part movement… the recognition of not understanding something followed by a sincere willingness to find out the truth for yourself.
So what can you discover about your own life?
The philosopher Socrates famously said more than two thousand years ago that “the unexamined life is not worth living.” So what does that mean?
I think it’s related to Vincent’s observation that self-absorption is a dead-end street, that when we are open to the world around us we can become more aware of who we really are, in truth.
The gateway into self-examination is found in the multiple “mirrors” which life presents to us each day. Who we really are is uncovered by our relationship to things, people and ideas — “why” certain activities or past-times are more enjoyable for us than others, or why certain people irritate us while others make us smile. In short, for why your soul “sings” in some settings and not in others.
Life is like a dance. It moves with a certain flow and rhythm.
Though in important ways we stand alone (insofar that no one can live your life for you), in other ways we are intimately connected with the world around us. We stand alone and yet are never truly alone. Life presents us with countless opportunities to learn, to grow, to discover our true selves and then, once found, to embrace who we really are. And this movement, this discovery, can only begin when we start with an open heart and have a willingness to embrace what we might find.
Meditation:
What are you grateful for in your life, right now?
Do your best to set aside 15 minutes of your day today and spend some quality time with yourself. Explore those areas of your life that bring you the most joy or the most peace, because it is through your unity with those circumstance that your true self emerges from the shadows.
Consider setting aside time each day or week where you can “unplug” and connect with the natural world, whether it’s taking a short walk in a local park, a bike ride on a country road or time spent in your own backyard.
