It’s easy to look at this image and focus on the horse running towards you. Horses are beautiful and powerful animals, especially when viewed up close.
But the thing is, this card is actually about the Rider, not the horse. Viewed from this perspective it’s clear that effective movement requires teamwork between horse and Rider. And it’s up to the Rider to have the vision, the goal, the destination in mind in order to lead the horse…
“A good jockey has to be physically well balanced. You’ve gotta have quick reflexes, and you’ve got to be incredibly coordinated. But it’s your instincts that have to be perfect. You can’t be an exceptional rider without instincts.”
~ Chantal Sutherland
Seen from this perspective, charting a path in life requires you to “follow” both your intellect and your instinct, that “gut feeling” which tells you when the moment is “right.” You can’t simply live life on autopilot or by simply following a script and expect to be happy.
Just as horse and Rider must work together to reach their destination, you too must be in touch with and balance both reason and emotion, thinking and feeling.

Some questions to guide your meditation:
- In which way(s) might your life be out of balance right now?
- Have you recently listened too much or relied too much on “logic” and “reason” recently?
- To what extent do you try to “control” things?
- Is there something your intuition is trying to tell you right now?
