A Tree might be the best example from nature of persistence in the face of constant change. They silently bear witness to amazing endurance through the slow roll of years season into season.
And yet, there’s also something magical about a Tree.
With branches reaching up to heaven it seems to bridge earth and sky, providing welcome shelter for birds and endless adventure for boys and girls brave enough to climb their sturdy limbs. And on hot summer days is there a better way to spend your time than resting in its shade?
The Tree comes to remind you that emotional and spiritual well-being can only take place when we’re rooted in the “soil” that’s right for each one of us. And its ability to “bend but not break” teaches us that we can truly weather any storm when firmly planted in “solid” ground.
So, on what “ground” do you stand?
Emotional and spiritual growth is not found by remaining “stuck” in a past which no longer serves (and which is, essentially, dead and buried). Rather, the patience and persistence of the Tree lets us know that our challenge and opportunity is to face continual change head on as life unfolds moment by moment in real time. Only then can real growth occur as we acknowledge the “roots” to our past while striving with open arms toward our as yet unrealized future.
- Stuck in the past
Some questions to guide your meditation:
- On what “chosen” ground do you stand?
- Which “things” from your past might you still be clinging to?
- Is there a “storm” on the horizon which causes you some concern? If so, what steps can you take to be better prepared to face it head on?
