Since the beginning of time our ancestors have lived in coastal regions or along the banks of rivers and lakes. Even today it has been estimated that 80% of the world’s population lives within 60 miles of the coastline.
The reason why people have historically settled near the sea is simple — our oceans have long supplied us with the bulk of our food.
No wonder, then, that Fish have traditionally symbolized prosperity.
Today we tend to think of “abundance” as relating only to finances or material “things” as outward “proof” of wealth. But the word actually traces its origins back to the Latin verb “abundare” which means “to overflow” or “overflowing.” To be abundant, therefore, means to have more than enough for you and those you care about, like family and close friends.
With this in mind Fish swim your way to share with you an important truth — that there’s a big difference between having a lot of money and being abundant.
Abundance involves the conscious recognition of what you truly value and then “taking stock” of how those values may or may not be at play in your life. And though there is some element of material well-being involved here, the focus is on how you define material success in terms of your ideals. Only then can you recognize ways for maintaining (or increasing) this “overflow” of prosperity.
Remember… it’s not about how much money you make, it’s how you make your money.
“There is a gigantic difference between earning a great deal of money and being rich.”
~ Marlene Dietrich
Some questions to guide your meditation:
- If asked, how would you define success?
- For what (or whom) are you most grateful for right now?
- If you could have more of one “thing” in your life what would it be?
- What is the one issue or circumstance currently preventing you from feeling abundant?
